Austrian newspaper Kurier published in his column “Politics” an expressive portrait of the leader of Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party (GERB), Boyko Borisov, citing Bivol. Kurier is a center-right, liberal daily newspaper with a circulation of over 100,000 copies.
Text of Kurier article:
It was a unique event: 45 Bulgarian artists were featured in an exhibition in the Vienna Künstlerhaus. So much modern art from the small Balkan country had never been seen Vienna – but someone else stole the show from the artists at that time – in 2006 – – the former and perhaps Bulgaria’s new Prime Minister and leader of the right-wing populist party GERB, Boyko Borisov.
Act One: Borisov, then Mayor of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, delivered the opening address. In it, art was incidental. He focused on the export of Bulgarian organized crime – his specialty from the time he was Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry. And he was so blatantly politically incorrect, for example speaking about Roma and calling them Gypsies, that his interpreter started turning red in the face while struggling to find milder wording.
Act Two: Gala Dinner at the Opera Ring (part of the central Viennese street “Ringstrasse” around the Opera – translator’s note). The appetizer was served: beetroot soup and candied cherry tomatoes. Suddenly, one of the guests of honor pushed noisily a chair away from the table. Borisov stood up and announced to the attendees that he was really hungry now and wanted to go find grilled chicken. Round head, army haircut, with almost no neck, a beefy body and sometimes rude behavior – these are Borisov’s trademarks. And this is how people like him. With this style, he managed to score 33 percent for his GERB Party in the elections on Sunday.
Born in 1959 in the suburb of Bankya in Sofia, the Karate master still lives there. And as one could tell from a recording that was secretly made a few years ago and later made public, in the mornings his mother still makes him margarine toast.
The ex-bodyguard of Bulgaria’s Communist dictator Zhivkov and of former King Simeon Saxe-Coburg is also known by his codename Buddha. According to the news portal Bivol.bg, as early as the 90s of the last century, the Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime has recruited him under this alias over his alleged ties to organized crime.
