Bulgaria\u2019s Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) said in a final rule<\/a> that scandalous lawyer Momchil Mondeshki<\/strong> owes nearly BGN 52,000 in taxes and social security contributions to the National Revenue Agency (NRA) for the period 2008-2014. The decision also rejected Mondeshki\u2019s defense theory based on a 900,000-euro fake deal with a Seychelles offshore and his grandfather.<\/p>\n

As Capital<\/em> daily reported earlier, the NRA had found after an audit that Mondeshki had spent over 100,000 levs more than what his revenues amounted to in the period 2008-2014. In order to prove his earnings, Mondeshki has devised the following scheme: his grandfather, Minko, has received EUR 900,000 as “temporary financial assistance” from the Exim Reveal Corporation, registered in Seychelles. The money has been inherited by his grandchildren. Thus, according to Mondeshki, at the beginning of 2008, he had 900,000 levs as \u201cinheritance\u201d.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, in order to prove the authenticity of this transaction, Mondeshki resorted to the services of the Sofia City Court (SCC), whose boss at that time was the close-to-him judge Vladimira Yaneva. A rule in his favor has been issued by a judge from the town of Velingrad, on a temporary assignment in Sofia, Petya Georgieva, after the offshore did not react to the legal request for information.<\/p>\n

However, the NRA did not find any trace of the 900,000 levs and the SAC had to admit that “the evidence collected in the case did not lead to the conclusion about the existence of such an amount”.<\/p>\n

Mondeshki is seen as one of the people closest to controversial lawmaker and media mogul Delyan Peevski. The lawyer has been convicted twice. The first conviction is for document fraud from 2005, and the second one is from 2006 for large-scale embezzlement. He is also one of the main protagonists in the “Yaneva Gate<\/a>” recordings, exposing serious abuse of power and trading of influence by Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov<\/strong>, former (and incoming) Prime Minister Boyko Borisov<\/strong>, the President of the SAC, Georgi Kolev<\/strong>, and the members of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) – Yassen Todorov<\/strong> and Dimitar Uzunov<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On November 1, 2016, in an interview with the close to Delyan Peevski<\/strong>, Trud<\/em> daily, Mondeshki claimed that the scandalous recordings had been staged by the SCC judges Vladimir Yaneva and Rumyana Chenalova to blackmail and discredit high-ranking State officials. This was strongly rebutted by Rumyana Chenalova, forcing the Prosecutor’s Office to reopen the \u201cYaneva Gate\u201d probe, only to close it recently.<\/p>\n

An investigation by Bivol showed that the Mondeshki family has accumulated unexplained wealth and enjoys special protection in the central town of Troyan and in the region by local police authorities.<\/p>\n
