Bulgarian Deputy PM Proud Owner of 5 Terraces

The Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Krassimir Karakachanov owns two open terraces and three glass-paneled ones and it is not clear whether the paneled terraces are legal, reveals a 3D Google Street View of his luxury penthouse on “Ossogovo” Street in the capital Sofia. Thus, Karakachanov may have the largest undeclared terraces, surpassing even the Chairman of the Committee for Combatting Corruption and the withdrawal of illegally acquired property (KPKONPI) (sic), Plamen Georgiev and his Deputy Anton Slavchev.

The strong longing for glass-paneled balconies and for expanding the living area is a long-cherished Bulgarian dream and it has not missed Karakachanov, also known with the codename “Ivan” as an agent and collaborator of the Communist-era secret services. As revealed by Bivol, he acquired in 2017 a penthouse on 55 “Ossogovo” Street with a total area of 210 square meters for only BGN 243,048, which comes down to less than EUR 600 per square meter. However, the penthouse also has terraces with a total area of 117.32 square meters, which he had not declared.

The 3D Google Street View shows that there are five terraces total. Three of them are on the lower level of the apartment and two – on the upper one. Two of the terraces are open, with a view of the street. The largest terrace has a view of the backyard and there is also a side terrace. Both are glass-paneled and with a solid roof. The fifth terrace is small and is located on the top of the penthouse with a view of the backyard.

A few days ago, Karakachanov himself said the following on Nova TV on the “ApartmentGate” issue: “I do not want to deal with this measuring of terraces, balconies, and basements.”

In this case, however, the measurement must be done by the State National Construction Control that should establish whether the paneled terraces of the Deputy Prime Minister have the necessary building papers and permits. The lowered cost of the apartment and the fact that the terraces are not listed in Karakachanov’s declaration are in the competence of KPKONPI, whose bosses also have problems with declaring terraces and apartments at discounted prices.
