“I am delighted that we are ahead of Romania in every respect – the fight against corruption, taxes, absorption of EU funds,” Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said on Nova TV on Monday and stated that regarding the fight against corruption, being ahead of Romania has happened even during the previous term in office of his GERB party.
The figures below are from the Corruption Perception Index of “Transparency International”. The organization reports the perception of corruption pressure of surveyed citizens of different countries.
2009 – Government of Three-party Coalition of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) and the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity (NDSV) until the end of July; GERB since August:
Romania – 71 out of 180
Bulgaria – 71 out of 180
2010 – GERB:
Romania – 69 out of 178
Bulgaria – 73 out of 178
2011 – GERB:
Romania – 75 out of 183
Bulgaria-86 out of 183
2012 – GERB:
Romania – 66 out of 174
Bulgaria – 75 out of 174
2013 – GERB until February; Caretaker government; BSP / DPS since June:
Romania – 69 out of 177
Bulgaria – 77 out of 177
2014 – BSP / DPS until August; Caretaker government; GERB / Reformist Bloc / Patriotic Front / Alternative for Bulgarian Revival since November:
Romania – 69 out of 175
Bulgaria – 69 out of 175
Data for 2015 are not yet available, however the table for the period 2009-2014 clearly shows that Bulgaria has never been ahead of Romania, but when it was equal with it, it was not ruled by GERB.
