Bivol on the world map of investigative media

Bivol is now part of the Global Investigative Journalism Network

Bivol has now been welcomed into the world’s largest family of investigative reporters and journalism nonprofits – the Global Investigative Jourmalism Network (GIJN). Joining GIJN is a great and unequivocal recognition for Bivol’s work over the years, Bivol founder Assen Yordanov says.

“We unanimously approved Bivol’s membership request”

“I have the pleasure to inform you that the board of directors has unanimously approved investigative website Bivol’s request for membership in the Global Investigative Journalism Network,” David Kaplan, CEO of GIJN, says in his official letter to our team.

He points out that GIJN is the world’s leading alliance of investigative reporters.” Membership is extended to nonprofit teams whose work advances the development of investigative journalism,” David Kaplan says further.

“GIJN is delighted to welcome nine new member organisations – a diverse group of newsrooms in eight countries that are bravely holding individuals and institutions to account in tough press environments,“ the networks’d official press release from 13 December says.

We are particularly excited to welcome our first member from Lebanon — The Public Source — as well as others from underrepresented nations such as Bulgaria and Indonesia.

The nine new media organisations were chosen among 20 finalists, who were selected out of a total of 61 teams seeking membership. The selection was decided by a vote among GIJN board members. As Bivol and the other eight editorial teams join CIJN’s global network, its membership count goes up to 244 organisations in 90 countries.

GIJN was registered as a non-profit in the US state of Maryland in 2014. Its website features publications in 12 languages that are read by journalists in 100 countries.

The network provides training in investigative and data journalism for media prfessionals. It also organises international events such as the Global Investigative Journalism и Asian Investigative Journalism Conference.

Bivol now literally lights up on the interactive world map on the GIJN website, where a Bulgarian publication is finally present. Bivol’s description in English, our logo, hyperlink and social media buttons are already active on the GIJN website.

Assen Yordanov: This is yet another recognition for Bivol

“Being accepted as GIJN members is a great and unequivocal international recognition for Bivol’s work over the years, a recognition for our independence, professionalism and the impact of our media presence that is not limited to Bulgaria, Bivol founder Assen Yordanov commented.

Yordanov pointed out that Bivol being the only Bulgarian media in the network also brings an added responsibility for us as journalists.

To stand up firm in defending the honour of the profession and never compromise on the high professional and ethical standards we subscribe to.”

That is the only way we can truly contribute to society and fulfill our mission to safeguard people’s right to accurate and honest information, Yordanov thinks.

According to Bivol’s founder it is important for the team to continue to serve society ensuring its basic democratic right to a true compass and an adequate choice in the chaotic world of propaganda, disinformation, manipulation and corruption.

“Bulgaria is especially in need of that – of honest and decent journalism unsucceptible to pressure, control and censorship,” Assen Yordanov concluded.

Bivol would like to thank its readers for their support as this membership is also a recognition for you.

And because, as GIJN also mentions in their description of Bivol, our team works under conditions such as SLAPP-type lawsuits, we kindly encourage you to continue to support us by donations through the Bivol Tax.
