The joint investigation by Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) “Making a Killing”, revealing a weapon delivery pipeline for over USD 2 billion is among the recipients of the seventh edition of the Global Shining Light Awards, bestowed by the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN). Bivol is the Bulgarian partner in this investigation that brought together journalists from several countries.

This year, the Global Shining Light Awards were presented at a special ceremony at the 10th Global Investigative Journalism Conference 2017 in Johannesburg that gathered over 1,000 professionals from around the world.

The story was shortlisted along with 11 other finalist investigations from more than 200 submissions from 60 countries. This year, the jury awarded two first prizes: to the Nigerian newspaper Premium Times for investigating mass extrajudicial killings in Nigeria “Inside the Massive Extrajudicial Killings in Nigeria’s South East” and “How the Onitsha Massacre of Pro-Biafra Supporters was Coordinated” and to the Iraqi Beladi TV Channel for its investigation into corruption in the Ministry of Education “Project No. 1“.

“Making a Killing” and the investigation by Indian journalists “Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Coverup” received special recognition with certificates of excellence in investigative journalism.

The competition this year was extraordinary,” noted David E. Kaplan, Executive Director of the GIJN, which sponsors the awards. “Despite the global backlash against quality journalism, this shows that investigative reporting is alive and well around the world.”
