Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov is supporting the candidacy of Irina Bokova to become Head of the United Nations. She, herself, made this statement an interview for Nova TV on Sunday (January 10, 2015). Bokova is also anticipating a formal nomination by the Bulgarian government in order to embark in the race.
Borisov’s support has very concrete financial parameters. It has given Irina Bokova’s family at least €170,000 for 2015.
This amount is the approximate remuneration of Bokova’s husband, Kalin Mitrev, who is still keeping his post at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Despite the government’s decision from November 2014 to remove Kalin Mitrev and once again replace him with Stefka Slavova, by January 2016 he is still holding the post of representative of Bulgaria (see here).
This fact is difficult to explain. It seems that the government has failed to fulfill its own decision, but this is of tangible benefit to the UNESCO Head.
Mitrev has been appointed to the EBRD post three times. He was the first Head of the Center for Mass Privatization in the Socialist government of Zhan Videnov. In late 1996, Videnov send him to EBRD, but in 1997 right-wing Prime Minister, Ivan Kostov removed him.
The next decision to give Kalin Mitrev this post was made during the term of the government of former King Simeon Saxe-Coburg in 2002. He remained there as well during the entire term of the Three Party Coalition that succeeded the King’s Cabinet, until he was recalled by Borisov’s first government. Stefka Slavova, nominated by then-Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, was appointed at the post.
Then, the Socialist-endorsed government of Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski, removed Slavova without citing any motives and again put Kalin Mitrev in EBRD in April 2014.
At the end of November 2014, at the proposal of current Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov, the Council of Ministers decided to recall Mitrev and bring back Slavova.
“She was dismissed right when she was about to become vice president of the bank, though she is an expert and is well-known in bankers’ circles. So, this is not a political dismissal, we are just sending back someone who worked there,” Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said during the meeting.
More than a year passed since this meeting, however, to date, Kalin Mitrev is still a director at the EBRD. And he receives a gross salary of € 170,000 per year.
This money is hardly in excess to Bokova’s family which has had some serious expenses due to the purchases of apartments in Manhattan for 2.4 million US dollars, as Bivol revealed earlier.
Kalin Mitrev has been a secret collaborator of the sinister communist State Security (Secret Services) under the codename “Simeonov”.
